Jeri Cates: Authentic Self-Love, Self-Compassion, and Self-Care

Jeri Cates went from being a homeless, single mom on welfare to being a nurse practitioner and entrepreneur. She defines herself as a crusader for self-love. Jeri became interested in nursing when she was told that nurses are teachers, among so many other things.

The BON sanctioned Jeri for marijuana use and a complaint from a patient. That patient bullied Jeri when she refused to order him medications that he requested.

Nurses have a high incidence of co-dependency. We must learn to take care of ourselves before caring for others. If we don’t, it could lead to burnout.

Teaching/Learning theory shows us that students cannot learn when they are stressed or scared. Treat students with kindness and support.

Jeri says that nurses “don’t necessarily eat our young, but sometimes we’re just not nice. ... Eating our young is like eating ourselves”.

Each one of us can set our intention to have an amazing day.

3 tips for nurses:

  1. Have authentic self-love, be honest with yourself
  2. Self-care
  3. Self-compassion
