Essential Ingredients for Well-Being with Maureen Metzger
Maureen Metzger is a doctorally-prepared nurse, healthcare leadership coach, and inclusive team-building expert whose coaching practice is shaped by decades of experience as a healthcare provider, educator, and leader. She is a Certified Professional Coach, an Energy Leadership™ Index Master Practitioner, and a COR.E Leadership Dynamics™ Specialist.
Maureen graduated with her BSN in 1984 and spent over 20 years in direct patient care, working with individuals in the advanced stages of chronic illness, primarily focusing on cancer, HIV, heart failure (HF), and end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
In 2005, she began an accelerated MS-to-PhD program at the University of Rochester. While pursuing her MSN, she joined a research team and developed a passion for research. After earning her PhD in 2012, Maureen moved to UNC Chapel Hill for a post-doctoral fellowship. She was fortunate to receive full funding from the National Institute for Nursing Research for both her pre-doctoral and post-doctoral programs.
Her clinical research is rooted in her extensive clinical practice. Maureen focused on examining the experiences of patients and families in the advanced stages of illness, designing, modifying, and implementing interventions to improve quality of life, enhance communication, and support decision-making, allowing individuals to meaningfully participate in treatment-related decisions.
Following her post-doctoral research, Maureen took a tenure-track (research) faculty position where she taught alongside her research. She found great joy in teaching and worked with full cohort classes across various programs. During this time, she also expanded her research focus to include inclusive pedagogy. Specifically, she explored the impact of strategies designed to foster a sense of belongingness and inclusion on students' academic and clinical outcomes.
After transitioning out of academia, Maureen completed an intensive coach training program at iPEC in 2023 and subsequently launched her own coaching business, Metzger Coaching.
Now, in this next chapter of her career, Maureen is dedicated to empowering purpose-driven, service-oriented healthcare leaders, providers, and educators. Her mission is to help them inspire and motivate themselves and others to achieve success both professionally and personally, without compromising their well-being.
